Wilckodontics/Periodontally Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics (PAOO): Overview and Benefits
Wilckodontics, also known as Periodontally Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics (PAOO), is an advanced orthodontic treatment that combines traditional orthodontic techniques with a surgical procedure to significantly speed up the movement of teeth. This method not only reduces the overall treatment time but also enhances the outcomes of orthodontic treatment, making it an attractive option for patients seeking faster results.

What is Wilckodontics/PAOO?
Procedure:
- PAOO involves a surgical procedure performed by a periodontist or oral surgeon in conjunction with an orthodontist. The surgery, known as corticotomy, involves selectively removing a small amount of the outer surface of the bone (cortical bone) around the teeth. This is followed by placing bone graft material, which enhances bone remodeling and healing.
- After the surgery, conventional orthodontic appliances like braces or aligners are used to move the teeth into the desired position.
- The bone graft helps to stimulate new bone growth, which allows teeth to move more quickly and reduces the risk of root resorption (shortening of the tooth roots) that can sometimes occur with traditional orthodontic treatments.
Benefits of Wilckodontics/PAOO
- Faster Treatment Time:
One of the most significant advantages of Wilckodontics is the reduction in overall treatment time. Traditional orthodontic treatments can take anywhere from 18 to 36 months, but with PAOO, - this time can be reduced to 6 to 9 months.
The addition of bone graft material not only supports faster tooth movement but also increases the bone density around the teeth. This can lead to a more stable and lasting outcome, reducing the likelihood of teeth shifting back to their original positions (relapse). - Broader Range of Treatments:
PAOO can be used to treat more complex cases that might be challenging with traditional orthodontics alone. This includes severe crowding, misalignment, and even certain cases that would otherwise require extractions or surgery.
The Wilckodontics/PAOO Procedure: Step-by-Step
- Consultation and Planning:
The orthodontist and periodontist collaborate to assess the patient’s dental and periodontal health. Detailed planning is conducted to determine the specific tooth movements required. - Surgical Phase (Corticotomy):
Under local anesthesia, the periodontist makes small incisions in the gum tissue to access the bone. The cortical bone is selectively perforated, and bone graft material is placed to promote rapid bone regeneration. - Orthodontic Treatment:
After a brief healing period, the orthodontist begins active tooth movement using braces or clear aligners. The RAP effect allows teeth to move more quickly and efficiently. - Monitoring and Adjustment:
Regular visits to the orthodontist are required to monitor progress and make necessary adjustments. The entire process is typically completed in 6 to 9 months. - Retention Phase:
After the active treatment phase, retainers are used to maintain the new tooth positions and prevent relapse.
